Behind the Facade Episode 13: Aron Little of A2Z Traffic

What does it take to enter an unfamiliar industry and build a business with around 50 staff in less than four years?

In Episode 13 of Behind the Facade, Aron Little of A2Z Traffic shares the decisions, setbacks and lessons behind that growth. The conversation follows his path from leaving school at 14 to running a traffic management business, with an honest look at learning the numbers, leading people and earning the trust of clients.

Episode 13 of Behind the Facade with Aron Little of A2Z Traffic.

Learning the Business Behind the Work

Aron's working life began early. After a short-lived start in carpentry, he completed a bricklaying apprenticeship before moving into earthmoving and, later, opening a smoothie bar with a friend.

The hospitality venture became an important lesson. Aron describes moving quickly on an idea without fully understanding the foot traffic, sales volume and numbers needed to sustain it. When the business closed after around 18 months, he took away a clearer understanding of why enthusiasm needs to be supported by proper homework.

That lesson carries through his approach to A2Z Traffic. In the episode, he credits business coaching with helping him understand his numbers and become more confident about the value of the service his team provides.

Taking Responsibility on Site

One of the clearest turning points came on an early major night job, when a road closure and detour went wrong.

Aron recounts the pressure of facing frustrated motorists, responding to the client and working with an experienced crew to get the situation under control. More importantly, he explains what changed afterwards: reviewing plans closely, driving detour routes himself and making sure the team understood the job before heading out.

It is a practical lesson for anyone delivering construction work. Knowing how a job should run on paper is only part of the responsibility. Being present, checking the details and understanding what the team faces on the ground can expose problems before they affect delivery.

Earning Trust Through Service

Mentorship has also shaped the way Aron works with clients. He describes learning to build relationships that make it easier for a client to pick up the phone when something goes wrong, giving the business an opportunity to respond and resolve the issue.

That approach is central to his position on pricing. Rather than competing only on the lowest rate, Aron focuses on reliability, site presentation and the cost of delays to the wider project.

He discusses using an auditor to check jobs and automated alerts to flag when crews may be running late. These are specific ways of keeping closer oversight of delivery. For a client with people and equipment waiting on site, dependable traffic management has value beyond the hourly rate.

Building a Team That Can Grow

As A2Z Traffic has grown, Aron's role has continued to change. At the time of recording, he describes a business with around 50 staff and 30 vehicles, approaching its fourth anniversary.

Developing trust in the office team has allowed him to spend more time on client relationships and site delivery. He also reflects on being open with staff during difficult periods and the loyalty of people who stayed with the business through them.

The conversation returns to a challenge familiar across construction: finding the balance between working on the business and staying close enough to the work to maintain standards. Growth brings more responsibility, and Aron speaks about the sense of purpose that comes from providing work for people who have families and commitments of their own.

It is a candid conversation about building capability, learning from mistakes and backing growth with the people and systems needed to deliver.
